The circle is set away from the house rather than attached to it, which is the right call on a property that already had a pool terrace doing the job of an entertaining space. This is the other kind of outdoor room — the one you use in October, facing inward at the fire rather than outward at the yard.
The low wall around the perimeter is structural and social at once: it retains the raised pad against the surrounding grade and it seats another half-dozen people when the four chairs are taken. Sized so that a person on the wall and a person in a chair are at roughly the same height, which is the detail that decides whether a fire pit space actually gets used.
