What the job involved
- Large-format paver field laid to a banded rectangular layout
- Fire table set on the centre axis of the field
- Low perimeter walls with lit pillar caps framing the open side
A patio this size needs a centre or it reads as a car park. The banding does that geometrically — a contrasting border inside a contrasting border, drawing the eye to the middle — and the fire table sits exactly where those bands point. Without that structure the same square footage of paving would feel like surplus rather than like a room.
The low walls and lit pillars around the open edge are what turn a terrace into an outdoor room. They give the space a boundary on the side that faces open lawn, and the lighting in the caps means the edge is still legible after dark, which is when a patio with a fire feature actually gets used.
Large-format units suit an area this big. Fewer joints across the field means the eye reads the surface as a plane rather than as a pattern, and the pattern work is saved for the bands where it does something.
