This is what the middle of an asphalt job looks like. The mat has been laid and the ride-on roller is compacting it while the material is still hot — compaction is the step that decides how long the surface lasts, and it has a window measured in minutes, not hours. Get it right and the driveway sheds water for two decades; rush it and the surface ravels at the edges within a few winters.

The old surface was torn out and the base regraded before any new material went down. That is the part no one photographs and the part that actually matters: asphalt laid over a failing base fails in exactly the same places the old one did, on roughly the same schedule.
